Nature park „Abava Valley”

The Abava Valley is one of the most significant ancient valleys in Latvia, formed as a result of the melting of ice-age waters. The Abava Valley is 2 km wide and about 30 m deep. The modern-day Abava River is 129 km long. Nature itself has made the Abava Valley one of the most beautiful places in Latvia. Along the Abava, there has historically been an important road. In the slopes of the river valley, several hillforts are found, where two ancient towns have formed – Sabile and Kandava.

The surroundings of Sabile are rich in deep ravines, pine forests, springs, and there is no standing water. Peace, beautiful coniferous and deciduous forests of the surrounding area, hills with dry air, and plenty of sunshine – create wonders.

The Abava River is part of the nature park “Abava Valley”, established in 1999, but this area has been under protection since 1957. The area of the nature park is 14,933 hectares, making it the largest of the 42 nature parks in Latvia.

The Abava Valley encompasses a complex of cultural and natural heritage that has formed from the 2nd millennium BC to the 20th century AD: the Abava Valley is rich in cultural and natural monuments, archaeological, architectural, and artistic monuments, cultural-historical landscapes.

The “Abava Valley” nature park has been designated as a Natura 2000 site and has a special status as a protected cultural-historical area.

In the “Abava Valley” nature park, there are 11 designated protected geological natural monuments, including rock outcrops, caves, springs, and waterfalls. Similar to other river valleys, the Abava Valley is floristically rich, with many plants characteristic only to the western part of Latvia.
