By walking the approximately 1 km long (one way) Kaltene Nature Trail with a bird watching tower, you will learn a lot of interesting facts about the birds living along Latvia’s coastline, including migratory species. The trail features a viewing platform and a tower for bird watching year-round. Spring and the second half of summer are the best times to visit the Kaltene Bird Trail, but it is also worth visiting in winter, provided the sea has not frozen over.
There is a small parking lot for cars and an outdoor dry toilet near the nature trail. The trail runs along the coastline heading north towards Kaltene. The view of the sea is often blocked by marshes and reed beds, behind which many waterfowl and coastal birds feel at home — herons, various species of gulls, ducks, swans, as well as smaller birds that mostly stay here and raise their young.
Here, in the reeds and meadows along Kaltene’s rocky coastline, live both waterfowl and other small birds that begin nesting and incubating their eggs in spring. Therefore, management work (mowing reeds and grass) cannot be carried out until mid-summer to avoid disturbing the birds’ nesting. Only when the birds have finished nesting and their young have grown can maintenance work such as mowing and other tasks be resumed on the nature trail.
The sea is interesting not only for its birds but also for its many stones, the largest of which is the Grīļi Giant Stone — the largest sea boulder in Latvia. Its height is 2.4 meters, circumference 15 meters, and volume 25 cubic meters.
