The Mērsrags peninsula (18.0 ha) is the second largest and most prominent peninsula in Latvia. It is a land projection on the western coast of the Gulf of Riga, about 2 km north of the village of Mērsrags. The narrow beach and the underwater slope, at depths of 3-12 meters, are covered with stones.
Approximately 50 meters from the shore is the Devil’s Stone, whose narrow upper part (1.5 meters) is visible above the water level. Another stone has a notch on its side, and it is called the Devil’s Footprint. According to legend, the rocky cape rose as the Devil was building a bridge over the Gulf of Riga.
Several kilometers of the sandy Mērsrags beach are ideal for both summer relaxation by the sea—swimming, sunbathing, or walking along the beach and pine forest—and for autumn and winter when you can observe the damage caused by storms and ice piles. There is a parking lot near the Mērsrags lighthouse. A boardwalk, built in 2018, leads from the parking lot to the beach.
