The idea of the monument and its necessity arose in the 1970s when the foundation was laid on Talsu-Street 1. The first monument was made in Riga, and it consisted of column with a portrait of Valdemārs with a height of 6 metres. Local company PMK was involved in transporting the monument, and their driver was tasked with bringing it to Valdemārpils. Unfortunately, the monument did not make it to the town as its upper part broke during transportation. The base stood empty for many years until Imants Ziedonis and his son Rimants Ziedonis arrived in Valdemārpils. The poet had reportedly spent a long time contemplating and imagining what the monument should look like in its place. Later on, in one of his writings, he mentioned that there were indecisive people in Valdemārpils because it took so long to address the issue of erecting the monument. Finally, the monument to Krišjānis Valdemārs, the founder of maritime studies in Latvia, was erected and unveiled on 18 November 1993. The author of this monument is the sculptor Dzintra Jansone.
