The Lake Sasmaka is a narrow lake that stretches for 7.2 kilometres, with an average depth of 6.4 metres. In the middle part of the lake, it narrows down, forming a sandglass-like shape. A road bridge has been reconstructed over this narrowing, which is an extension of Raiņa-Street and is the only road bridge of its kind in Latvia. The road leading to Vandzene seems to divide the lake into two parts – the northern part is called the Lake Ārlava, while the southern part is referred to as the Lake Valdemārpils. Several rivers flow into the lake, including Mazroja, Grava, and Urga. The Lake Sasmaka is also popular among anglers due to its diverse fish species. Here, you can spot a rudd, bream, perch, pike, gudgeon, carp, crucian carp, roach, bleak, smelt, eel, and others. If you wish to go fishing, do not forget your fishing permit.
