Dižstende Manor Knights’ Castle
The Stende Manor belonged to von der Brigen family. There are buildings created in different periods of time and in different styles at the centre of the manor, making one of the biggest manor structures in Courland. The oldest building in manor complex is the Knights’ Castle building, formerly fortified castle’s residential block, built at the beginning of the 16th century. Behind the moat the old castle was surrounded by a masonry. The only access road was along the pond dam over the exterior gate tower draw bridge. The underground tunnels from the castle’s cellars were useful in case of danger or the need to retreat. The visit of the castle has to be reserved in advance!
